Daiwa New Era Fly Reel

Editorial

A fully machined aluminium fly reel with three interchangeable cartridge spools in the box. That was the pitch -- and for a while, Daiwa was the only brand delivering it. The New Era used CNC-machined aircraft-grade aluminium throughout, finished in low-glare anodise, with an oversized disc drag running carbon washers. Each colour-coded spool located via a recessed channel and three spring-loaded ball bearings, secured by a self-retaining screw cap.

Daiwa Australia built the range across four sizes: the 184g NE 56 for trout streams through to the 329g NE 1011 for tuna and sailfish. Reversible retrieve, exposed palming rim, stainless bearings, saltwater-rated construction. The protective case held the reel and both spare cartridges.

Then it disappeared. No longer manufactured, no longer stocked, no longer listed. The New Era solved a genuine problem -- multiple line setups, one reel platform -- and the market moved on before it caught up.

Why It Matters

The interchangeable cartridge spool system was the New Era's reason for existing. Other reels offered spare spools. The New Era shipped with three, colour-coded, engineered to swap in seconds without tools. For fly anglers who fish floating, intermediate, and sink-tip lines across a single session -- particularly in saltwater where conditions change with the tide -- this eliminated the need to carry multiple reels. Daiwa priced the system at AUD $389.95, well below the cost of three separate reels. Nobody else offered a fully machined aluminium cartridge fly reel at any price.

Best For

  • Anglers who fish multiple line setups across a session
  • Saltwater fly anglers who need quick spool changes between floating, intermediate, and sink-tip
  • Anyone hunting secondhand for a discontinued Daiwa that solved a real problem
  • Collectors of innovative discontinued tackle

Collector / Field Notes

The New Era appears to be fully discontinued rather than temporarily out of stock. Daiwa Australia's website retains a fly reel schematics service page but no active product listings, suggesting Daiwa Australia may have quietly exited the fly reel market or is between product cycles.

The NE 1011 at 329g and WF11 capacity indicates Daiwa envisioned serious saltwater application. Weight discrepancies exist between sources: the NE 78 is listed as 200g by Fishing World Australia versus 227g by Angling Active UK. The Fishing World figures may represent an earlier production run or measurement methodology difference.

Secondhand market value is uncertain. Original RRP was AUD $389.95. The reel was never officially sold in the US market.

FAQ

Is the Daiwa New Era still in production?

No. The New Era appears to be fully discontinued. It is sold out at all known retailers and no longer listed on Daiwa's active product pages.

How does the cartridge spool system work?

Three colour-coded aluminium cartridge spools are included. Each locates via a recessed channel meeting three spring-loaded ball bearings. A central screw-down cap secures the spool and is self-retaining so it cannot be lost when loosened.

Can the New Era handle saltwater?

Yes. Daiwa marketed it for species from mountain stream trout to tuna and sailfish. The NE 1011 (WF11, 225 yd 30lb backing) was the dedicated saltwater size.
